Empowering youth in South Africa through chess education

Stimulating critical thinking and enhancing emotional development

Chess for Change

Our Story

We’re teaching critical thinking, social skills,
self-esteem, patience, empathy, and personal responsibility.

10 schools

in South Africa

3-10k students

per week

Over 17 years

of changing students lives

Our Goal

  1. To help the schools develop more graduates who are thinking, caring, and productive members of society

  2. To establish the teaching of chess as a recognized profession, alongside the teaching of any other academic skill

While our major emphasis will be on serving disadvantaged children, we also recognize that chess is beneficial for all children, regardless of financial, racial, social, or religious considerations.

“We adopted a top-down and bottom-up approach and have tried to educate the nation that chess is not just a game for geeks, but the best exercise for the brain, and all evidence conclusively proves that this changes lives. There have been studies done around the world that prove that kids who play chess get higher results on intelligence tests and consistently better grades than those who don’t.”

- David Berman, Chairman of Chess For Change

Our Objectives

The Chess for Change program has three key objectives:

Nurture
To nurture critical thinking, social skills, and a sense of personal responsibility and empathy among children in Township schools. By doing so, we aim to empower them as thoughtful, compassionate, and creative members of society.

Foster
To foster critical thinking, social skills, and personal responsibility among children in more privileged schools, supporting their development as thoughtful and creative individuals.

Facilitate
To facilitate meaningful interactions between children from township schools and their more privileged peers through chess tournaments and other activities. Our goal is to promote lasting relationships and bridge the gaps between different segments of South African society.

Our Mission

To promote and support chess as an educational tool that will excite young learners about the joys of academic excellence, stimulate critical thinking, and enhance their emotional development.

Integral to this is utilizing chess as the centerpiece in bringing together children from the various social and economic sectors of society, with the aim of promoting better understanding, respect and appreciation among the various sectors of society.
